Two Simple Types of Wine

Even those who are not wine consumers know there are two simple types of wine; white, and red. This is an extreme over-simplification of the types of wine enjoyed by millions. Within these two categories, you will find a vast variety of type of wines, ranging in flavor and price. Knowing the types of wine that exist under these two categories will assist you in wine selection and pairing wine with food.

From a highly generalized standpoint, pairing wines with food goes something like this: White wines are typically paired with seafood, chicken, turkey, Chinese food, and on occasion, pork. When serving or consuming beef, roasts, filet mignon, lamb, duck, veal, or pastas, red wines are the standard. More important than pairing wine with food, however, is paring types of wine with the consumer. If white wine is not enjoyable to you, then you certainly won't order it to compliment your saut?ed scallops. Choose instead a type of wine that suits your individual tastes.

When investigating types of wine, there are a few stand-outs within our two categories. When seeking white wine, some common choices are chardonnay, white zinfandel, sauvignon blanc, and johannisberg riesling. The majority of these types of wine are bottled in California, as the conditions of the state are impeccable for growing and harvesting wine grapes. These types of wine range from the very dry to sweet and unlike red's, are typically not aged in wood barrels. This preserves their freshness and unique flavor of these types of wine.

For bold, daring wine consumers, we have the red wines. Of these types of wine, many are bottled in California as well. A typically dry and more acidic option, red wines are typically aged in wood in order to achieve their bold, deep flavor. Types of wine to look out for include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, zinfandel and petit syrah. The color of these types of wine may vary from a blush to a deep burgundy. The color of red wine is from the skins of the grape, not from the juice.

Although types of wine vary greatly, and you are certain to find one that suits your palette, do not hesitate to broaden your horizon of wine consumption. The types of wine available to the public are certainly worth investigating and most importantly, enjoying.

Joseph Phelps - "Insignia"

"The 2001 Insignia (an 18.000 case blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot) is an inky/purple-colored effort representing a return to the superb quality of such vintages as 1997. Aged in 100% new French oak, this dry red California wine reveals gorgeous aromas of melted licorice, creme de cassis, liquid minerals, and hints of chocolate and spice box. The finish is long, full-bodied, opulent, and voluptuous. Considerable tannin is largely concealed by the lavish richness, extract, and glycerin. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020+." April 2008 - Wine Delivery

A Wine Delivery Artilce for Your Viewing

Choosing Wine Cellar Accessories

There are a number of nifty items and gadgets that can help
you organize, maintain and enjoy your wine cellar. For those
of you that have a larger wine cellar, keeping track of what
is added or removed from the collection can be a pain. One
can use either a paper record keeping system, or jump into
the twenty first century and incorporate some electronic
record keeping system.

Barcode readers are a wonderful way to keep track of the
different wines that are added to or removed from your
wine cellar. "But what kinds of electronic barcode reading
contraptions will I need to buy in order to use a barcode
system?", you may ask. It's really very simple. There are very
easy to use plug and play barcode readers that can plug
right into the USB port of your computer.

USB barcode scanners typical run between $120-$175 USD
and can automatically discriminate between all the popular
bar codes. You can use your own barcode tags or input any
required information to use the barcodes already located on
each bottle of wine. When it's time to uncork or add a new
bottle of wine to your collection, simply point the barcode
scanner at the barcode label and pull the trigger to update
your records.

Printable wine tags are another must have wine cellar
accessory. These tags come on a sheet that can be fed into
your inkjet printer. You can create your own custom layout
or notes, as well as include a barcode if you so desire. There
are also regular hand written wine bottle tags that can be
more affordable if you do not need to be able to print the
wine bottle tags on your printer.

If you require a tag system that is more durable than paper
wine bottle tags, there are also heavy duty plastic wine
bottle tags that fit securely over the neck of the bottle.
These can be reused as needed and will last for years and
years. These types of wine bottle tags can be written on
with any felt tip pen or a dry erase board marker.

If you'd like a ready-to-go wine bottle tag with custom
barcodes system, check out the Vinote ? wine tags.
These wine bottle tags last a very long time and
adhere snugly to wine bottles. Every tag is uniquely
numbered and bar coded. The bar code section is
perforated so that it may be folded out of sight or
easily torn off.

If you're not ready to update your wine storage
record keeping, and prefer regular paper records,
there are a number of attractive wine catalogue
books already formatted for just such record
keeping. A decent wine catalogue book should be
small enough to carry with you if you will bring it
along on trips to other wine cellars.

A hygro-thermometer is a very necessary component
to any wine cellar, as it ensures that the wine is
resting at the appropriate temperature and
humidity. These devices do not adjust temperature
or relative humidity, but can be paired with the right
devices in order to make sure that everything is
running smoothly.

Things We Learned This Week

Nobody takes care of their aging actor population like the British.Lately I've been spending my Saturday nights watching British comedies on PBS, including "Last of the Summer Wine" which features a cast that looks to be entirely 70+. Imagine a prime time US show with nothing but AARP actors. There's something calming about their weary, pointed delivery... even though it's just a dozen interchangeable seniors setting each other up for quips and putdowns. It must be English Envy, because I'll wat

Greetings! This wraps up our study of Isaiah. I’ve learned a lot, but must say it has been one of the most challenging books I’ve studied. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’ God chose Israel, not the other way around. 2 All day long I have hel

Worst wine retailer? What makes a wine retailer a bad one? Which one or ones do you specifically find "bad," however you may define that term here? I would like to know. And maybe you would like to vent. I'll give you an example based on my experiences with a fairly well-known wine store on the Upper East Side. The sales people are rude, condescending, aggressively push whatever junk they've overbought and handle delivery and billing problems with all the grace of Talibanis at a bar mitz
